I'm a Victim of This Song 1995

Rist has used Chris Isaak's song “Wicked Game” on several occasions especially in video installations. It was used first in this video. The song itself is extremely sentimental and insistent, and talks about a miraculous encounter of love-at-first-sight and of the fear of love. In her traditional style, Pipilotti interprets this song by forcing her voice up to an extreme pitch giving the song a grating almost pathetic dimension. The images start with a sky streaked with light then young and old couples sitting around a table in a hotel lounge with superimposed images of female hands manipulating old photographs. Then the editing gets slightly quicker with a mix of exterior views of skies and prairies and shots of the lounge and its photographs hanging on the walls. As the film goes on, Pipilotti's voice becomes more and more piercing as she untiringly repeats the song’s refrain, finishing in an unmitigated and hysterical screech. The video ends with images of women in swimming costumes in the foreground with the face of the barman behind. In this new clip Pipilotti changes her register, as we don’t see her at all on the screen, and the images reflect a broader spectrum of filmmaking techniques (some aspects of which appear and are developed in autonomous way in the installations such as Slip My Ocean which use the same music). The colours are murky, the movements slow and the impression of togetherness in its serenity contrasts with the turbulent energy of previous works. In terms of content, this work prefigures the Pipilotti’s current work, and has less to do with televisual culture focusing more on creating atmospheres in which the viewer is fully immersed in all its meanings; I’m a victim is probably a film made for wide-screen projection, certainly if you want to do justice to the cinematographic beauty of her images. It is also worth pointing out that since 1995 Pipilotti Rist has only produced films for wide-screen projections or projections that are bigger still, in which the monitor is just part of the overall effect.
