When people see an exhibition, they start to think about the artist’s motivation for creating the work and the meaning behind it. The word “meaning” is so profound that it has been separated from the ordinary world and become impossibly distant. Because the viewer’s first impression of a painting is visual, it evokes an explorer entering into a landscape or environment created by the painter. When the viewer enters into this creative concept with his whole body and mind, “meaning” naturally appears. Whether a painting is large or small, only a few square feet can fit within a person’s field of view. In these paintings, landscape and figures pass their time alone. Artists dissect certain moments of landscape or events and place them on a canvas. They are solidified fragments that have passed through his countless painstaking or unconscious screenings, giving the viewer a space outside what the eye can see.
The four artists from the Northeast participating in this exhibition seem to excel at considering and remembering that people do not pay attention to clear and cool landscapes. In their works, all movement is stopped, and reduced to outlines. They form something enduring in time, that is, a space that the eye can see. This is significant respite from an ordinary world without desire.
