China’s Red Guards or Hong Wei Bing tell a story not forgotten by the Chinese people. During

the Cultural Revolution, an era that came just as suddenly as it left, Mao Zedong developed the basic form of struggle to prevent the restoration of capitalism. However, what arose was proletarian democracy in action; millions of young students ignited an entire cascade of class struggle. August 18th, 1966, the Red Guards made their first public appearance with a rally of a million in Beijing's Tiananmen Square. Battalions of youths, enlisting in the Cultural Revolution, march by singing, 'Sailing the Seas Depends on the Helmsman'. Mao Zedong approvingly reviews these new revolutionaries and puts on a Red Guard arm band, emblazoned with the three characters 'Hong Wei Bing.' The revolutionary leadership of the Communist Party encouraged the Red Guards to spread their Revolutionary fervor throughout China's vast countryside and draw millions more into the class struggle. The Red Guards also invaded the factories, many times disrupting production. And everywhere the Red Guards went, their weapons went with them--copies of the 'Red Book' as well as the “Sixteen Points” documents, even their trademark portable presses to print propaganda on the spot. The Red Guards eventually returned to their schools and continued to carry on their struggle there. But in their travels they had mobilized millions to battle out the class struggle under socialism. The key was getting beneath the surface to the substance; to distinguish who was revolutionary ….. And who was not.

The artist Yu Lin created this Red Guard series with finesse and perfection to epitomize the delicate yet robust young women entrapped in the era of the Red Guards. He shows them sacrificing their beauty, youth and womanhood to the revolution, as they let the innocence of adolescence slip away.
