Through the eyes of his figures, Xu Hong probes and examines the deepest corners of the human heart, these inner gardens that are blur, misty and ambiguous. His latest series of paintings take the nondescript garden as its setting. From within the gardens, macabre scenes are unraveled. One painting sees a young boy try to chisel a boat in the middle of a lake, another sees a scuba diver just about to emerge from a lake that is set within a traditional Chinese rock garden and pavilion. These contrasting images are perplexing, but compelling, but perhaps it represents Xu Hong’s thoughts on middle class life and existence. |
