Rumors - Contemporary Art Exhibition

This exhibition began with the old question: artists, curators, critics, how do each of them fundamentally understand art? The precondition of art is the foundation of artworks. This understanding determines the basic features of an artist’s works; it is the latent support for the composition of the work. This means that, if you have a certain type of understanding, you will produce a certain type of art, whether or not you are conscious of this process. In the recent past it has seemed as if art was going through an unprecedented period of flourishing, but this certainly did not lead to any accumulative increase in learning. The majority of works, although they might adopt different media, use different materials, or be presented in an original form, they still began with commonly held assumptions about art. Therefore, in the dialogue that takes place within a piece, when it is really effective, it is the artist’s take on his own life and background. How are we to understand and question the art that we are undertaking or wish to undertake? And on this set foundation, how are we to really make the work our own?

‘Rumour’ is the title of the exhibition. Here we are trying to respond to two questions that we often come across in art: one is the growing separation of formalist art from society; the other is the crisis that many artists face when their works are accepted by society. The first emphasizes the self-disciplined nature of art. Art wishes to clearly reveal its differences with other industries, its individual nature, and this tendency often turns into an emphasis on a language of form. The other is that in the current logic of a constant expansion of the meaning of art, there are attempts to involve or include social sciences in art in order to solve the question of art’s current segregation from real life. But through this exhibition I have attempted another response – art is a kind of rumour, and artists spread the rumour. In the concept of art, rumour creates an artificial reality which has real world logic, in order to make people believe, but at the same time it seems to lack confirmation, it is not reality itself. In certain types of situation, perhaps rumour can act as a metaphor for reality. Here we are attempting to solve the contradictions between art and reality, art is an analysis of the special features of reality itself. Furthermore this analysis is not only aimed at reality, it has its own structured nature, it is complete, it has its own logic. And so it is like rumour, it is not real, but it has its own order. There is a complimentary relationship between the significance of the work of artists and reality, which eliminates the nervous feeling we often face. But these explanations are only the inspirations from discussions, interviews and attending exhibitions, they are certainly not meant as solutions. What is my art? This is still the question that an artist must spend a lifetime considering.
