克里斯托弗·伍尔1955年出生于芝加哥,现居住于纽约。Ken Johnson曾在《纽约时报》中评论伍尔说:“克里斯托弗·伍尔创作了一些20世纪八、九十年代最有活力的画作。在80年代时,伍尔创作了一些新波普的画作,他利用工业机械将装饰性的图案压制到白色的画板上。当他在某天看到一辆崭新的白色卡车被喷漆喷上了‘性(sex)’和‘爱情(luv)’的字样时,他也开始在自己的作品中加入这些词语。”

安妮特·凯尔姆1975年出生于斯图加特,现工作并生活在柏林。凯尔姆的摄影作品仿佛是以一种普通的方式记录了摄影表现不朽的传统形式,例如,它们都由中等大小的静物、肖像、物品照片、建筑及景观照片组成。她会利用单个主题创作出单件或是系列作品,以此来表现不愿她不愿服从于对主题或是概念的单一理解。

莎迪娅与拉嘉的作品可以被解读为一种双重记叙艺术。身为作者的拉嘉与身为视觉艺术家的莎迪娅拥有一段非传统的艺术背景。阿莱姆家世世代代都十分欢迎朝圣者们在麦加朝圣期间住进他们家中,阿莱姆两姐妹则从这些朝圣者们的身上学到了不少知识。从20世纪80年代开始,两姐妹就是开始为了观看展览和演讲而周游世界,同时也为了对艺术和文学进行详细地探索与鉴别。从某种角度来说,她们还希望能够找到朝圣者们讲述的故事中关于文化和文明的起源,这启发了她们的想象力。
“The Black Arch”是由阿莱姆两姐妹合力创作而成的。展览大部分是关于这两位艺术家以及她们对世界不同看法的交汇点的,当然,还与麦加和威尼斯这两个城市之间的交汇点有关。此外,“The Black Arch”与旅程、过渡也有关联,这是受到了马可·波罗以及14世纪的旅行家伊本·白图泰(ibn Battuta)的启发——他们都是如何通过旅行在不同文化之间搭建桥梁的典范。莎迪娅曾表示她很希望能够追随马可·波罗的脚步,“将我的城市麦加带到威尼斯”。阿莱姆姐妹将重点放在了这两座世界性城市及其所具备的力量之间的相似点上,展现了她们对这个充满了习俗和传统的世界的双重视角。

“Opera Aperta / Loose Work”起源于“国家认同(national identity)”与“社群”这两个概念的连接。在荷兰,社群的概念在其文化公共建设中独特地体现了出来。荷兰政府从上世纪60年代就开始发展这种复杂的公共建设,这形成了一个以艺术和文化的产生、传播及反映为基础的公共系统,在这个系统里,艺术家的社会地位得到了稳固。然而,这样的文化公共建设逐渐失去了公众的支持,并且变成了重要讨论的主题。因此,公共空间、艺术与艺术家的社会地位以及“社群”这个概念,需要在荷兰进行重新定义。
“Opera Aperta / Loose Work”含蓄地展现了这种文化公共建设的潜在价值。它将这个问题上升到国家性表现及国家认同(这与威尼斯双年展的历史保持一致)是否能够进行重新阐释上。此外,它还考虑了这个问题能否从很大程度上看作与荷兰标志性的文化公共建设相关。从这场展览的名字中我们可以看出,这是一个开放并且需要集体努力的项目。
