Shanghai Gallery of Art and TOSHIO SHIMIZU ART OFFICE are pleased to present the exhibition “超空间 INBETWEEN” by three artists whose work features “inbetween” in different forms: Kengo Kuma, Shiro Kuramata and Anish Kapoor. Three distinct approaches taken by these artists produce synergistic effects in a multi-dimensional space that will offer an extraordinary experience to the audience.

Kengo Kuma is an architect who perceives the origin of a kind of architecture, one that constructs itself by breaking up spaces. The spaces created by Kengo Kuma are in continuation while being deconstructed. Air and light stay inside of the space while permeating the outside. In other words, he creates a space with both clarity and ambiguity, where humans and the universe (nature) are not completely separated. Kengo Kuma is one of the best known architects working today. His recent architectural projects include; “TOH – THE OPPOSITE HOUSE”, hotel, Beijing, China, 2008; “CON / FIBER”, pavilion, Milano, 2009; “LOTUS HOUSE”, house, Kanagawa, Japan, 2005; “Great (Bamboo) Wall”, house, Beijing, China, 2002.

Shiro Kuramata was a product designer who has removed the physicality from daily objects. Kuramata’s design removes gravity from the objects, liberating them from the restraining spells of physical existence. The late Shiro Kuramata was a famed designer. Although he passed away 20 years ago, the influence of Mr. Kuramata’s work on product design today remains strong. Some of his representative products include “Side 1,Side 2,” design series of “Furniture in Irregular Forms, 1970; “Begin the Beguine,” design of homage to Hoffman, 1985; “How High the Moon,” steel mesh chair, 1986; “Miss Blanche,” acrylic/artificial roses chair, 1988.

Anish Kapoor is one of the world’s preeminent sculptors today. He first gained international acclaim at the 1990 Venice Biennale where he represented Britain. His recent solo exhibitions include “Anish Kapoor,” Royal Academy of Arts, London, 2009; “Anish Kapoor,” Museo Guggenheim de Arte Modernoy Contemporáneo, Bilbao, 2010; “Cloud Gate”, Millennium Park, Chicago, 2004. The sculptures created by Anish Kapoor have the power to transform an entire surrounding space. Anish Kapoor’s sculpture is “zero” space appearing in this real world. This “zero” space exists not only within his sculpture but dominates the whole space where his work is placed and the audience who stands within the space.

Toshio Shimizu, the Artistic Director, has worked with many eminent artists in Japan and abroad as a leading curator of contemporary art for the last twenty-five years. Recent projects include “Two Mountains (Naoya Hatakeyama and Balthasar Burkhard),” Museum der Moderne Salzburg, Austria, 2008 - 09; “Tokyo Midtown”, Art Direction of Commission Works, Tokyo, 2007; “3rd Shanghai Biennale 2000”, Artistic Director, Shanghai Art Museum, Shanghai, 2004.

A fully illustrated book entitled “超空间 INBETWEEN” , with an essay by Artistic Director Toshio Shimizu, will be published on the occasion of this exhibition.
