Shilpa Gupta was born in Mumbai, India in 1976 and
studied sculpture at the Sir J. J. School of Art there.
Gupta creates artwork using interactive websites,
video, gallery environments and public performances
to probe and examine subversively such themes as
consumer culture, exploitation of labour, militarism
and human rights abuse. She has exhibited widely
and recent shows include ‘Indian Summer’ at the
École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-arts in Paris,
‘Edge of Desire’ at the Asia Society in New York and
‘Blessed Bandwidth.net’, a net art commission from
Tate Online, London. Upcoming projects include the
2006 Sydney Biennal and 2006 Liverpool Biennal.
Gupta currently lives and works in Mumbai.
