We cordially invite you to visit the opening exhibition of SUNLAND Space, Hangzhou. This exhibition has invited five young artists, Su Wenxiang, Yan Bing, Yang Ming, Zhang Jiaping and Zhang Liaoyuan. It will showcase more than ten works of different media created by them, including installation, video and painting.

“A matter that does not concern much in the society might be valuable for someone”. In general, in contemporary art creation, from the means of production to the purpose of production, neither of them seems like real production; they are the expense of production to a certain extent. Avant-garde art is comparatively more romantic than classicalism; its loyalty to material typology and the alternation of it seem to be self-evident for highlighting the artists’ judgment of the past and the future; in a way, it has become the artists’ declaration to pursue the noumenon of art.

As for the choice of materials/things concerning the creation, some artists rely on the image of the material itself to connect with the era, no matter cutting or recombination. Therefore, in a short period of time, the art circle can easily witness the rapid fall of some sort of material/thing to become a daily language inside art. The operation of another part of artists in this aspect seems more like a deliberate evasion-to choose materials related to personal experiences so as to grasp them more easily. As same as the former artists, their choice faces problems as well, but what they need to be alert to is that although their choice does not fall into a definite genre of some sort of material geography, they have given up the appeal of the radical meaning the materials belong to; their choice of objects (materials/things) and taste is indeed at the risk of sliding to a fascination of chic sceneries.

“Annals of Materialism” does not intend to involve abstract thinking, such as the materialization in contemporary art and fetish. It will only express the five artists’ attitude when facing the materials/things in the context mentioned above, as well as what kind of position they stand to take care of the objects in their respective clue of creation.

Note:

SUNLAND Space is established in Hangzhou in 2012. It devotes itself to becoming the professional art institute that propagate and promote Chinese contemporary art. It especially pays attention to local art ecology and is willing to support and coordinate its development. Meanwhile, it will connect other areas and makes the space a platform of communication and linkage for contemporary art resources in Hangzhou. SUNLAND Space is located at the core area of Hangzhou, close to Dragon Sports Center. It is 130 square meters and provides convenience to small-scale exhibitions and activities.
